Situation

  • Overview: National Grid’s London Power Tunnels Phase 2 (LPT2) is an ambitious project designed to modernise London’s power infrastructure by constructing new deep underground tunnels to house high-voltage electricity cables. This phase builds upon the success of the first phase, which saw the completion of 32 kilometres of tunnels and the installation of significant power cables across the city.

  • Scope: LPT2 involves the construction of 32.5 kilometres of 3-meter diameter tunnels that run deep beneath the road network from Wimbledon to Crayford. Scheduled to be fully operational by 2027, these tunnels will carry high-voltage cables to strengthen the city’s electrical supply infrastructure. Ellis partnered with Taihan Cable & Solution, a leader in cable manufacturing, to provide secure and reliable cable management solutions for this critical infrastructure project.

  • Complex Urban Environment: Constructing tunnels beneath London’s dense urban environment required precise engineering and coordination to avoid existing underground structures.

  • High-Voltage Cable Safety: Ensuring the safety and stability of the high-voltage cables was paramount to prevent potential faults or outages.

  • Long-term Reliability: The project required cable management solutions that guarantee reliability and longevity, which is crucial for minimising future maintenance needs.

Solution

  • Ellis Centaur Cable Cleats and Intermediate Straps: Used to secure the 400kV cables within the tunnels, Ellis Centaurs were selected for their proven performance and reliability in high-stakes environments.

  • Partnership Synergy: Ellis Patents and Taihan Cable & Solution leveraged their longstanding partnership to deliver a robust cable system. Taihan’s expertise in cable installation, coupled with Ellis’s innovative cable cleat solutions, ensured the project’s high standards were met.

  • Community Engagement: LPT2, like its predecessor, emphasised collaboration with local communities, demonstrating a commitment to minimizing disruption and engaging with local stakeholders.

  • Enhanced Infrastructure: Upon completion, the new tunnel system will significantly enhance the reliability and capacity of London’s power network, reducing the risk of outages and accommodating future energy demands.

  • Increased Capacity: The upgrade will support London’s growing energy needs and the integration of renewable energy sources, aligning with the city’s sustainability goals.

  • Strengthened Partnership: The successful delivery of cable management solutions in LPT1 and the continuation into LPT2 reinforce the trust and effectiveness of the partnership between Ellis Patents and Taihan Cable & Solution.
